Our History
Paya Lebar Chinese Methodist Church (PLCMC) has an inspiring journey of transformation since its inception in 1939! What started as a small Hokkien congregation has blossomed into a vibrant and diverse community, offering Hokkien, Mandarin, and English services by 1989. With roots tracing back to 1937 a gospel chapel near Singapore’s city boundary, PLCMC officially became a church in 1939, led by the dedicated Ms. Tan Phek Geok, our first full-time pastor.
During WWII, as many Singaporeans sought refuge in rural areas, the church became a beacon of hope. The Hougang area evolved from a “back port” to a bustling HDB New Town by 1989, bringing new faces to our congregation. As we welcomed members from new towns like Ang Mo Kio and Toa Payoh, our community shifted from primarily working-class to a dynamic professional base, reflecting the educational advancements of future generations. Today, PLCMC proudly embraces its expanding role in ministering to diverse communities, evolving alongside Singapore’s rapid urbanization!
